Program: S3 Notes
Version: 1.0 non-network
Date: 09/19/92
Author: George Spafford
Purpose:
To have a database to track research notes and if needed, to print the
notes out sorted by either authors' names or titles.
Install:
Create a directory on your drive and move the program files there. Do not
omit any files (unless you do not want the document (DOC) files).
You'll need approximately 890K of disk space free and at least 520K of RAM.
Operation:
Run NOTES by typing: NOTES <ENTER>
This will bring up the main menu with options for DATA manipulation, REPORTS,
or to QUIT. Use the arrow keys to move around and <ENTER> to select an item.
<ESC> will also let you quit the program.
<F1> brings up context sensitive help.
DATA:
This option lets you edit, search, view, add and delete data. The menu is
at the bottom of the data entry screen and you can use the arrow keys to
move around on it. Use <Enter> to select your option. F1 will bring you
context sensitive help at any time during the process.
Next: Look at the next database entry.
Prev: Look at the previous database entry.
Find: Search for an entry based on the author entry, title,
publication, publisher, etc.
Top: Go to the first entry in the database.
Last: go to the last entry in the tthe database.
Edit: Change the displayed entry.
Add: Add a new entry to the database.
Copy: Make a duplicate entry of the displayed data.
Del: Kill the displayed data.
+File: Not used by Notes yet.
-File: Not used by Notes yet.
Swap: Move the menu line around on the screen.
Quit: Exit - <ESC> will do the same.
IF YOU ARE ADDING OR EDITING DATA ON THE SCREEN AND YOU MAKE A MISTAKE, DO
NOT USE ESCAPE TO BACK UP TO THE MISTAKENLY ENTERED DATA - USE THE ARROW
KEYS. ESCAPE WILL ABORT THE ENTRY PROCESS FOR THE RECORD THAT YOU HAVE
DISPLAYED.
One note about the data that you enter. The internal sort is based on the
author's name. I suggest that you enter author's names in the format of
LAST, FIRST MI - this way the sort will make more sense. This sort process
can not be changed.
REPORTS:
You have two options on the reports menu, AUTHOR or TITLE. All these two
entries do are to vary the method by which the data is sorted when it is
printed. AUTHOR sorts it by the authors' names whereas TITLE sorts the
printed data by title.
At this time, you must print the entire database. I am still working on a
way to selectively print information. Also, page breaks will be off until I
can figure out how to treat the variable length Notes/Memo fields.

v1.0 09/19/92 Initial Release
To network or not to network - that is the question!
If there is interest, I can release a network version with
record locking.
